President Peres hosted a state welcome ceremony for the President of Poland, Bronislaw Komorowski

President Peres:

"Our young people and children return to Poland year after year full of sorrow and bravery to tell the world that we will never forget"

 

"Almost half of the victims of the Nazi Holocaust were murdered in Poland; the Jewish and Polish people swore that the darkest days of our history will never be repeated"

 

President Komorowski:

Poland has a special sensitivity with regards to Israel's sovereignty

 

Poland is committed to educating to ensure remembrance of the Holocaust and to an uncompromising fight against anti-Semitism

                         

President Peres hosted an official state welcome ceremony for the President of Poland, Bronislaw Komorowski, this morning at the President's Residence in Jerusalem. President Peres and President Komorowski inspected an IDF honor guard and delivered statements at the ceremony. President Peres began his speech and said, "Welcome to Israel, Mr. President. You are a true friend of Israel who takes a clear stance anti-Semitism. Almost half of the victims of the Nazi Holocaust were murdered in Poland; the Jewish and Polish people swore that the darkest days of our history will never be repeated. Our young people and children return to Poland year after year full of sorrow and bravery to tell the world that we will never forget." President Peres continued and said, "The State of Israel is engaged in negotiations for peace. Our greatest hope is the hope for peace. I know that Poland also has a great hope that the peace process will be completed, we will do all that we to come to an agreement with our Palestinian neighbors."

 

President Komorowski of Poland began by stressing the historic relations between Israel and Poland and his countries commitment to standing by Israel. He said that Poland has a special sensitivity with regards to Israel's sovereignty. He added that Poland is committed to educating to ensure remembrance of the Holocaust and to an uncompromising fight against anti-Semitism.  He expressed his hope for peace, security and stability in the region and for Poland to continue to strengthen her relations with Israel in the fields of economic cooperation, diplomacy, science.

President Peres thanked his counterpart and said, "Israel sees in Poland a responsible partner within the European Union. I thank you for your support for Israel and your clear stance on the Iranian issue and Israel's right to security. Removing the Iranian threat is important to Israel but also to the entire world, ideally through economic sanctions. The sanctions have had an impact and there is value in continuing them. Israel will not be a victim of threats. Israel and Poland are in the same camp, the camp of peace, security and cooperation. You are a personal friend of Israel and I thank you for your visit."

 

Later today at 16:00   President Peres will accompany President Komorowski at an official visit to the Hall of Remembrance at Yad Vashem. Then at 19:00     President Peres will host a State Dinner in honor of the President of the Poland which will be attended by prominent figures from Israel and Poland. During the dinner President Peres and President Komorowski will deliver speeches
