A Glittering Event

On the 12th June Israel’s captains of industry, leading politicians, distinguished diplomats and commercial leaders gathered at the Hilton Hotel for the traditional gala reception celebrating Russia’s Independence Day. As in previous years, in attendance were the top military leaders from WW2 – Generals and Captains in their fine uniforms and displaying their medals and awards. These were the people who led Russia to victory over the Nazis, stopped Hitler’s domination and halted six years of bloody war that cut down millions of our people, of Russians and of citizens of the countries of Europe.

If two years ago there was specially vibrant excitement as the world celebrated 65 years since the victory in the war, this year the excitement and buzz were due to the expectations of the unusual event of the visit to Israel by the Russian President, Vladimir Putin, shortly after his re-election, following Dmitry Medvedev’s role in that position.

Adding to the excitement of the upcoming visit of the distinguished visitor with his entourage of principal senior Russian politicians is the fact that during the President’s state visit, he plans to honor the memory of fallen Russian soldiers who gave their lives for the historical victory in WW2, during a visit to the cenotaph in Netanya.

Israel’s Foreign Minister, Avigdor Lieberman, and the Russian Ambassador to Israel spoke warmly of the importance of the diplomatic ties between Russia and Israel and the major success in all aspects of ambassadorial relations between them, relations that have steadily improved over the past few years.
