Bastille Day is the common name given in English-speaking countries to the National Day of the Republique de la France, which is celebrated on 14 July each year. In French, it is called the Fête Nationale Française
A memorable reception in honour of Bastille day, marking the French Republic's national day was hosted in the evening on the 14th of July by the French Consul General of Jerusalem,Mr. Nicolas Kassiandes in the Consulate's garden.
The event was marked by sobriety as a result of the nation's tragic situation.Despite a small and modest guest list as opposed to past events.
A notable guest who was present was the director of the French Biblical and Archeological School of Jerusalem, the Ecole Biblique,Olivier Poquillion,OP who was appointed to the position upon Pope Francis's recommendation. Also present was Dr. Meir Masri, author, professor and scholar of political science at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
French Israeli citizens of dual nationality whose allegiance to France was palatable during the signing of "La Marseillaise" were conspicuous in their enthusiasm.
In the Consul General's speech he mentioned the legacy imparted by France's constitution i.e. Liberty,Equality and Fraternity, the active role France has undertaken in the present conflict, its commitment to combating antisemitism and the cultural role it plays in Jerusalem with the presence of its Cultural Centre in Hillel street,The Roman Gary Institute.
Indeed a great pleasure to have participated in the French Republic's celebration and looking forward to future Bastille day receptions.
Diplomacy.co.il offers best wishes to the embassy, consulate, people and nation of France on their national day.
