This week the Israeli Foreign Ministry, together with Israeli singers, artists, Olympic athletes, diplomats  and politicians, launched a special photo exhibition, “Unordinary February”, to mark Israel’s Disability Awareness Month.

The Upside Down exhibition — or “Hafuch'' in Hebrew — features famous Israelis doing handstands or posing next to their  colleagues alongside children with disabilities at iconic sites in Israel. in the exhibition a unique picture of foreign minister Eli Cohen together with workers from his ministry with disabilities is included

The Foreign Ministry teamed up with Alumot Or (Rays of Light), the Center for Jewish Impact, along with the AlumotOr Foundation and Haredim LaKetsev to launch the exhibition. The project is the brainchild of Ambassador Dan Oryan, the director of the ministry’s Balkan Department and a certified gymnastics coach.

“We have created one language that is understood by everyone, and connects everyone together,” said Mickey Hayat, CEO of Haredim LeKetzev, which strives to create unity in Israeli society through capoeira.

As Israel’s envoy to North Macedonia, Oryan initiated a series of events around children with disabilities. He invited special sous-chefs to help cook at Israel’s Independence Day celebration, and flew in special needs youth to participate in the March of the Living to commemorate Macedonian Jews Murdered during  the Holocaust.

“Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs attaches great importance to the issues of inclusion and securing the rights of people with disabilities,” Oryan said at the opening on friday

Other celebrities and public figures in the photos include the Croatian, Albanian, Kosovar, Serbian and Bosnian diplomats to Israel; Abu Ghosh regional council head Salim Jaber; Jerusalem Santa Claus Issa Anis Kassissieh, singer/actor Idan Amedi, and many more.

They were joined by Olympic gymnasts Linoy Ashram, Neta Rivkin, Artyom Dolgopyat, Nicole Zeligman, and Alex Shatilov, as well Ambassador Dan Oryan himself, in participating in the pictures.

Debate for Peace returned to Yale University Jan. 19-22 for the 49th year of the Yale Model UN conference (YMUN 49). A delegation of 10 Arab and Jewish students participated in the conference, coming from Jerusalem, Herzliya, Petah Tiqva, Even Yehuda, Modi’in, Givat Haviva, and Baqa al-Gharabiya. Yale MUN is one of the top MUN conferences in the world for high school students, and the DfP students got to join exciting committees like the historical Joint Crisis on the Bosnian conflict, “The Queen is Dead” British simulation; a French revolution theme committee; indigenous people’s council, and more. They also engaged with the nearly 1500 students from all over the world who came to YMUN 49.

The students spent weeks preparing for the conference, including research, writing position papers, submitting Social Impact Projects, and more. The work was rewarded with a very competitive performance at the conference, which included Outstanding Delegate awards for Tal Ben Ze’ev (Hadassim high school, Even Yehuda), and Maayan Zilberman (Rishonim high school, Herzliya) and both a Best Delegate award and the Visual Arts competition award for Ari Plosker (Yachad school, Modi’in).

Along with the conference, the students held meetings with leading academics and diplomats focused on conflict resolution and international law. These meetings included a meeting with Professor Emma Sky, director of the international leadership center at the Jackson School of Global Affairs at Yale; a talk with Imam Ismaeel Malik; meetings with numerous diplomats at the United Nations, as well as visits to the British and Kosovo missions to the UN. The group also engaged broader communities, meeting with students at the Yale Council on Middle East studies and visiting the Chabad of Yale in New Haven, CT, and Temple Emanu-El, Sutton Place synagogue, and congregation Anshe Hessed in NYC, where they talked to local youth and other community members.

On behalf of all of the participants and their families, Debate for Peace expressed its deep appreciation to the Yale MUN Secretariat for their hard work and dedication in inviting the conference, and for enabling DfP to participate, as well as all those who met with the group during their stay.

“Breaking Records” Tel Aviv-Yafo municipality to host Israel’s first ever world-record breaking attempt in athletics at the ‘Tel Aviv Playtika Marathon’

Tel Aviv Playtika Marathon | Friday February 24th, 2023

30 elite female runners from Israel, and the world, will participate in an attempt to break the record in the 10km for women lead by Israeli runner, Luna Chemtai Salpeter, as part of the Playtika Tel Aviv Marathon

For the first time on Israeli soil, the Tel Aviv-Yafo Municipality will host an attempt to break a world record in athletics. Israeli running champion Lonah Chemtai Salpeter, who holds the titles of third place in the Marathon at the World Championship 2022 and third place at the 2022 European championship in 10km and holds the Israeli record for a full Marathon of 02:17:45 hours, will participate in the ‘Tel Aviv Playtika Marathon’. She will be leading the attempt to break the world record for women, along with 30 elite female runners, in the 10-km event. Kenya's Agnes Tirop is the current world record holder for the 10km race after clocking in 30:01 in Germany back in 2021.

Mayor of Tel Aviv, Ron Huldai: The marathon is ideal for breaking records, be it running time, distance or any other accomplishments. I invite everyone who wishes to break a record to come run, and take part in the event. And if you are someone who doesn’t like to sweat, come and cheer on those who are on their way to achieving the goals they have set for themselves.”

Lonah Chemtai Salpeter: Running 10km in the ‘Tel Aviv Playtika Marathon’ is very special for me. It’s an incredible challenge to break the record and I hope to give it the best run that I can, to bring joy to many people, including the ones who come out to cheer us on from the sidelines. My goal is to beat my personal best and finish the run in under 30:05 minutes. For me, it is a great honor to make my country proud in every race that I compete in. I invite all the runners to cheer me on, running by my side and to be part of this challenge.”

Salpeter is part of NN Running Team, which includes Olympic marathon champion Kenyan Eliud Kipchoge and other world-renowned runners. In fact, in 2019 Salpeter finished the 10km in 30:05 minutes, back then the fastest time on record, but that result was not determined as an official record due the nature of the competition in Tiburg, Holland, which did not adhere to the required regulations needed to determine record holders.

Salpeter and other top runners from Israel and around the world will set off from the marathon’s huge starting gate on Rokach Boulevard. The 10 km running route us a fast and flat course with access for supporters on each side. Tel Aviv residents and city guests are invited to watch the world-record breaking attempt and to cheer Lonah and other top runners on, on their way to breaking records.

‘Tel Aviv Playtika Marathon 2023’ will be held in the heart of Tel Aviv on Friday, February 24th for the fifteenth time. Over 40,000 runners are expected to take part in

one of the six urban routes passing through the city streets in an event sponsored by the Tel Aviv Municipality.

The following races will be held as part of the event,: a full marathon (42.195 km), a half marathon (21.1 km), a 10 km race, a 5 km race and a para cycling race. A mini-marathon race (800 meters and 1.5 km) for children will be held on Wednesday, February 22nd. Discounted registration is possible for all events until Saturday, January 21st, 2023.

The Marathon is sponsored by the Tel Aviv Municipality and produced by "Kappaim". Some 5,000 production and medical personnel, security and stewards will accompany the runners throughout the entire route.
